• Dublin-based TensorX successfully secures €8 million in seed funding.
  • The company partners with Solstice to develop €1 billion in European AI infrastructure.
  • This collaboration aims to ensure that AI operations within the EU operate solely on European soil.
  • Growing demand indicates a significant shift towards sovereign AI in Europe, with 75% of companies expected to transition workloads to local providers by 2030.
  • Solstice will introduce the aiUSX yield asset to support AI infrastructure financing.

Earlier this week, TensorX, an emerging AI infrastructure company based in Dublin, announced the successful completion of an €8 million seed funding round. Founder Shane Morton described this fundraising as an “opening move” towards a significantly larger ambition—developing robust AI infrastructure across Europe. This announcement comes hand-in-hand with TensorX’s newly forged partnership with finance provider Solstice, which aims to enable the construction of up to $1 billion worth of sovereign AI infrastructure in Europe.

The strategic collaboration between TensorX and Solstice seeks to finance essential AI hardware and data centre setups to address surging demand for localised computing power within the European Union. Speaking on the partnership, Tim Grant, chair of TensorX, emphasised, “Europe wants AI that can run on its own terms, on its own soil, without handing its data to someone else’s cloud on the world stage.” This sentiment underscores the increasing apprehension regarding the dominance of US tech firms over European technology ecosystems.

TensorX operates by acquiring and managing AI hardware and data centre capacity across the EU, ensuring that data remains on European soil, adhering to local regulations. With growing concern over data sovereignty, more companies are recognising the necessity for infrastructures that guarantee full data residency without external retention.

The need for sovereign AI is becoming increasingly paramount, supported also by data from Accenture indicating that 62% of European organisations are seeking sovereign AI solutions. By 2030, 75% of enterprises anticipate moving their AI workloads to local providers, with Gartner highlighting a definitive trend towards regionalised computing solutions.

In direct response to this influx of demand, Solstice plans to launch a yield asset called ‘aiUSX’. This financial product will empower enterprises to finance AI projects through the capital they already possess, mitigating the escalating costs associated with AI infrastructure. Ben Nadareski, CEO of Solstice, pointed out that “every company is turning into an AI company,” thereby necessitating the ability to convert set-aside capital into productive assets amid rising inference costs.

As European regulators scrutinise the extent of control exerted by American tech giants, there’s a growing sentiment amongst local businesses to implement practical solutions rather than merely political ones. Grant has indicated that European companies are not interested in making a political statement regarding their AI strategies; they simply require trustworthy infrastructures compliant with local laws, a goal TensorX and Solstice are keen to fulfil.

The collaboration paves the way for a significant infrastructure build-out that prioritises localised AI capabilities, with Stuart Connolly of Deus X Capital highlighting the critical involvement of capital in this process: “Sovereign AI is one of the biggest infrastructure build-outs of this decade, and it runs on capital as much as it runs on chips.”

In the grand scheme of European technology, this partnership signifies more than just a financial venture; it represents a foundational shift in how AI will be accessed and governed in a continent that’s increasingly wary of external influences.

As developments unfold in this rapidly changing landscape, the success of TensorX and Solstice could well signal a new era for homegrown AI capabilities in Europe. Notably, with AI-driven solutions reshaping industries globally, the EU stands at a crossroads that could redefine its technological future.

Interestingly, the ongoing conversations surrounding data sovereignty have led to a wave of initiatives by various European governments aimed at bolstering local data infrastructures, further reflecting the urgency and relevance of the mission undertaken by TensorX and Solstice.
