In a significant shift for the tech landscape, Cloudflare has revealed that agentic traffic, primarily generated by automated bots and AI-driven processes, has surpassed human traffic on the internet for the first time in history. This revelation underpins the growing dominance of artificial intelligence in coding and web management, a trend underscored by Cloudflare’s latest acquisition of Voidzero, the creator of the widely adopted open-source JavaScript toolkit, Vite. While the purchase price remains undisclosed, it signifies Cloudflare’s commitment to enhancing its offerings as reliance on AI tools becomes increasingly standard.

Matthew Prince, co-founder and CEO of Cloudflare, highlighted the rapid evolution of software engineering practices, stating, “The best engineers I know are shipping more code than ever and writing less of it by hand. AI is doing more of the typing, so everything around it has to keep up.” This acquisition aims to meld Cloudflare’s robust global edge network with Voidzero’s suite of tools, including Vite, Vitest, and the Rust-based Rolldown bundler, thereby creating what the company describes as a “frictionless” deployment stack.

Voidzero’s founder, Evan You, expressed optimism about the merger, emphasizing the focus on keeping the Vite ecosystem open and vendor-agnostic. This allows for the collaborative spirit of the original tools while leveraging Cloudflare’s extensive resources to enhance the developer experience for engineers worldwide. The Voidzero team, including You, will remain at the helm of Vite and its associated tools post-acquisition.

In an indication of its commitment to the open-source community, Cloudflare has allocated $1 million to support a fund aimed at independent maintainers and contributors within the Vite ecosystem. This move arrives at a time when the Cloudflare Vite plugin has achieved nearly 14 million weekly downloads, accounting for over 10% of Vite’s total weekly volume. In a striking statistic, AI usage within the company has increased by 600% in just a few months, further validating the shift in how web interactions are structured.

These developments follow Cloudflare’s recent decision to streamline its workforce, laying off over 1,100 employees—around 20% of its staff.
