In a surprising shift, Tesla Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) has begun to embrace advertising, a practice the electric vehicle giant has historically shunned. Known for its reliance on customer satisfaction and organic word-of-mouth, Tesla is now launching a series of ad campaigns across social media platforms, marking a significant departure from its traditional marketing approach.

Tesla Turns to Social Media

Recent reports from Teslarati indicate that Tesla is running advertisements for its Full Self-Driving (FSD) feature on Facebook. This key product is positioned as central to the company’s future growth trajectory and is also integral to Elon Musk’s almost $1 trillion pay package. With a deadline looming on March 31 for FSD transfer eligibility for new vehicles, the timing of these ads seems deliberate.

In addition to Facebook, advertisements for Tesla Energy products, including the company’s Powerwall energy storage system, have been spotted on YouTube, owned by Alphabet Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL). This dual focus on FSD and Powerwall in its advertising strategy suggests Tesla may be pivoting to highlight products that offer higher profit margins.

Tesla’s Advertising Shift

Tesla’s advertising efforts are substantial when contrasted with its past spending. The company’s budget for U.S. advertising in 2022 was approximately $152,000, a stark contrast to the staggering $3.6 billion spent by General Motors in 2023. Musk had previously asserted that the company did not require advertising, famously stating, “Instead, we use that money to make the product great.” However, the recent increase in ads in international markets and calls for enhanced marketing in the U.S. may suggest a change in strategy.

Earlier this year, Tesla did initiate an advertising blitz across social media aimed at encouraging shareholders to support Musk’s pay package. This latest round of ads could serve to promote the FSD and Powerwall products, potentially leading to improved financial performance and shareholder returns.

Tesla Stock Price Action

On the trading front, Tesla’s stock has seen a slight increase of 0.14%, currently sitting at $399.24. Although its share price has fluctuated between $214.25 and $498.82 over the past year, it remains down 8.6% year-to-date in 2026.
