Manuscript has officially relaunched as an independent creative studio under the direction of creative director and author Mitchell Oakley Smith. This marks a significant pivot for the studio, which previously existed as a biannual art and design journal.
The new Manuscript offers an expansive range of services that encompass brand strategy and identity, creative campaigns, content creation, editorial ideation, cultural partnerships, and experiential events. “Manuscript is built on a holistic understanding of how culture actually moves: from brand to agency to media and back again,” Oakley Smith articulated during the relaunch. His extensive career across these domains has led him to address the frequent disconnects he observed in the industry.
Oakley Smith elaborated, “Manuscript is a response to that: a studio designed to connect those dots. It’s about more than creating ideas; it’s about understanding how they travel, who they’re for, and what gives them value once they’re out in the world. The goal is to create work that is not only conceptually strong but contextually aware.”
The relaunch builds on Manuscript’s original foundation established in 2011. Initially conceived as a broadsheet-format publication, the studio produced 13 issues by 2018 and even branched out into a contemporary art book imprint that featured biographical works on various Australian artists. Now, having reemerged in 2026, Manuscript aims to extend its remit into a broader creative practice.
Key client projects already initiated include a strategic brand platform and campaign for winemaker Church Road, previously under Pernod Ricard Winemakers, in addition to developing a brand proposition and digital content suite for Woolmark’s global sustainability initiative, Woolmark Plus.
Mitchell Oakley Smith is no stranger to the creative landscape; his credentials include important editorial and creative roles at prestigious organizations such as Semi Permanent, Destination New South Wales, Esquire, and Woolmark. His involvement spans the Southeast Asian market, solidifying his reputation as a significant player in the creative industries.
