Regional Australians are leading the charge in domestic travel, spending an average of $5,770 per holiday, outpacing their metropolitan counterparts by $286. A recent travel insights study commissioned by media collective Boomtown reveals that regional tourists typically stay around ten nights compared to just nine for their city-dwelling peers.

The findings indicate that 81% of regional Australians are gearing up for domestic trips, with a notable 47% expressing a preference for road trips. Additionally, 22% indicated an interest in adventurous caravan or camping holidays. However, the study also highlighted that one in three regional travellers do not participate in any loyalty programs, and a mere 17% utilize AI tools for travel planning.

According to Laura Allen, research and insights director at Australian Regional Insights, “It’s clear that regional Australians are seeking out opportunities to travel for relaxation, to spend quality time with their family, and to experience something new.” The data suggests that domestic travel is a major priority for regional Australians in 2026, with 145 distinct national destinations available for exploration. This trend signifies a shift away from reliance on traditional tourist hotspots, driving demand for more diverse locales.

The inclination for local spending also distinguishes regional travellers, as 72% plan to support local businesses, compared to just 56% of metropolitan travellers. The study posits that 2026 will be characterized as the “year of two trips” for those from regional areas, with a focus on escapes and rejuvenating family time.

Francesca Ryan, marketing lead at Boomtown, noted, “This new research shows that regional media offers a prime opportunity for inspiration and planning for Boomtown travellers.” She also emphasized the potential for brands to engage regional travellers, considering that a significant portion remains outside of loyalty programs and leverage minimal AI for travel arrangements.

The research was conducted by Australian Regional Insights between September 15 and October 2, 2025. For further information, you can visit the original article on AdNews.
