US President Lifts Tariffs on Irish Whiskey During Irish Visit

In a surprise announcement at the Amgen Irish Open, US President Donald Trump declared the removal of US tariffs on Irish whiskey. The announcement brought cheers as Trump concluded his two-day visit to Ireland at his Doonbeg golf resort in County Clare.

Speaking on the 18th green during the prize-giving ceremony, Trump revealed that he had discussed the issue of tariffs with Taoiseach Micheál Martin. The President commented, “Everybody’s been bugging me. They are saying, ‘Would you do me a favour? It’s so unfair what’s going on.’ ‘Could you possibly take the tariffs off of Irish whiskey?’ On behalf of the United States of America, I am going to take the tariffs off.”

This decision removes the 10% tariff currently imposed on Irish whiskey entering the US market. Shane Lowry, who took home the Irish Open trophy, joked that Irish distillers ought to send him a cheque, considering the immense value of the lifted tariffs.

Industry Reaction

The Irish Whiskey Association (IWA) warmly welcomed the news, noting that Irish whiskey exports to the USA were worth €450 million last year. In return, Irish distillers purchased €80 million worth of US whiskey casks, fostering a robust trade relationship that supports thousands of jobs and significant investment.

The IWA expressed, “Nothing exemplifies the US-Ireland trade relationship better than Irish whiskey. The return to tariff-free trade will lead to further growth and investment.”

Political Implications

Earlier on Sunday, Trump also reiterated his support for Irish unity, calling it “one of the naturals of all time” to unite the two countries. Despite some diplomatic backlash, Trump expressed his fondness for his comments but avoided committing to a timeline for a border poll. Taoiseach Micheál Martin labeled the reaction to Trump’s remarks as an “overreaction.”

The President’s visit concluded with a helicopter departure from the golf course to Shannon Airport, marking the end of his trip to Ireland.
